Sónar Istanbul, co-sponsored by Charm Music and Digilogue, was held for the first time at Zorlu Performing Arts Center with a unique festival experience that brings together music, creativity and technology. The festival, which is held 53 times so far in 29 different cities around the world, will host the accomplished names of electronic music in Istanbul. With a two-day special installation that is exclusive to Istanbul on the theme of “The Immediate Future”, Sonar Istanbul offers so much more than a festival.

It offered a multi-tiered program that combined sound, light, music and creativity to about 10,000 people over the course of two days. Besides the performances of big names in electronic music, Sónar Istanbul was also intriguing with it’s Sónar+D section sponsored by Digi.logue, which hosted foresighted talks, innovative workshops and interrogative exhibitions; taking music, creativity, and technology at it’s focus point.

While at the audio visual shows performed under Sónar+D on March 24, NONOTAK, Cem+Rg Modular Live visuals by nos, and Aesthetic Animisim drew interest, of the shows performed under Sónar Istanbul in 3 different stages, Weval, HVOB, Kode9, Roisin Murphy, and Nina Kraviz received much admiration for their stage shows.

Receiving great interest in it’s first year from it’s fans from Istanbul, Sónar provided possibilities for new fields of experience at the intersection of technology, music, and arts.

Sonar + D, which will be part of the Sonar Istanbul Festival with the main sponsorship of Digilogue, will be a platform that focuses on the use of technology and information sharing with visual arts, interactive content, sectoral and creativity based panels, artist speeches, audiovisual performances, presentations, demos and workshops. It will bring together experts from different parts of the world who will shape the future of the creative process.

Sónar Istanbul hosted mind-opening talks like “Fostering Young Entrepreneurship”, “The Contemporary Consumption of Music and Beyond,” “Cultural Creativity,” and “Turkish Experimental Music Anthology.” Done by the collaboration of Ouchhh and AudioFil, The Data Performance that took place on the LED screens of Zorlu PSM took all the Sónar Istanbul participants under its effect. The show that was seen from every floor of the PSM brought along a unique audiovisual experience.

Another memorable show was the famous Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda’s Supercodex project performed under Sónar+D. In the other stages of the festival, Floating Points, Nosaj Thing, and Tim Hecker put forth an unforgettable experience to participants. As for the most anticipated name of the festival, combining their experimental sounds with multimedia shows, Moderat did not disappoint and succeed to cast everyone under their spell, once more.
