Art Chain Game N1: Art as Pandemic

What is “Exquisite Corpse”?

“Cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse) is a collaborative drawing approach first used by surrealist artists to create bizarre and intuitive drawings” “It was invented in 1925 in Paris by the surrealists Yves Tanguy, Jacques Prevert, Andre Breton and Marcel Duchamp.

“It is a game in which each participant takes turns writing or drawing on a sheet of paper, folding it to conceal his or her contribution, and then passing it to the next player for a further contribution.”

Process

01: The participants are informed about the sequential rules and are expected to produce an artwork according to the instructions.

02: The participants are sent artworks the artist of which they do not know and are asked to produce a new artwork according to their reaction, feelings, and thoughts, without knowing the context.

03: The artists have 24 hours to produce their own artwork after seeing the artwork sent to them from the previous artist in the chain.

04: Afterwards, the artwork they produce is sent to the next participant, so an artistic chain that follows and inspires other artworks is created.

05: We will be collecting all the works via e-mail and passing them to the next artists.

06: Please also add at least 2 (random or not) sentences to your work - so that when each work and word are combined - a surprise meta-narrative comes out.

07: Mediums can include; a gesture, movement, still images, dance, creative writing, video poetry, film, audio-visual, animation, collage, photography, painting, watercolor, sound, music, sculpture - it is up to you - however, you wish to respond to the person’s work before you.

08: Game open for 40 days.
